The Dove Winds townhouses offer great lodging for families. Located in Chincoteague, Virginia, each unit has two bedrooms, one and a half bathrooms, a living area, and a fully-equipped kitchen. The units are clean and well-maintained and just a few minutes from the entrance to Assateague Island.
The Birchwood Motel is a typical drive-up motel that offers adequate and clean lodging. In addition to the pool and outdoor pavilion, it boasts a 700-foot fishing pier available for use by guests. It is located on the south end of Chincoteague Island in Virginia, close to the downtown area.
Tom’s Cove Park offers a luxury camping experience with three fishing piers; a boat ramp; a marina; an Olympic-sized swimming pool; a playground; and a clubhouse with video arcade, pool tables, and jukebox. Centrally located in Chincoteague, Virginia, it is just a few minutes from Assateague Island.


Water Sports – Fishing, crabbing, and clamming are all popular pastimes in this area and are available for all levels of expertise. Clamming can be done with a clam rake off a boat or simply by hand at low tide. A quick glance at a tide chart will tell you the best times to go, and the locals can advise you where the best places are. Crabbing can be done off any of the many fishing piers in the area, and most gas stations and grocery stores sell the necessary equipment. Be sure to check out the local crabbing regulations before heading out, to be sure you are compliant with all laws.
Nature Tours – If you’re interested in taking a nature tour by boat, Captain Barry’s Back Bay Cruises offers a nice trip that’s great for all ages. Their hands-on Sea Life Expedition has you wading for clams, catching oysters, and trapping crabs. You’ll get a nice overview of the natural history of the area as you explore the ecosystem up close and personal.
Charter Fishing – For boat rentals (including kayaks) or charter fishing, Capt. Bob’s Marina offers an expansive menu of options. In business for more than 50 years, they are a well-known and trusted source of on-the-water sport and entertainment.
Wild Ponies – Assateague Island National Seashore is home to more than 300 feral ponies that roam the beaches, forests, and salt marshes of the island in both Virginia and Maryland. They are usually spotted in groups of five to 10 and are always a delight to see.
